Public Health Ontario (PHO) is an arm's-length government agency dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of all Ontarians and reducing inequities in health. As a hub organization, PHO links public health practitioners, front-line health workers and researchers to the best scientific intelligence and knowledge from around the world.
PHO provides expert scientific and technical support relating to infection prevention and control; surveillance and epidemiology; health promotion, chronic disease and injury prevention; environmental and occupational health; health emergency preparedness; and public health laboratory services to support health providers, the public health system and partner ministries in making informed decisions and taking informed action to improve the health and security of Ontarians. The Ministry's home page provides up-to-date information and announcements about Ontario's health system. As there is currently a prominent focus on public health, there is plenty of useful information, including direct links to the various commissioned reports (e.g. Walker and Campbell), information on West Nile virus and influenza. The Ministry includes the Public Health Division and the Health Promotion Division.
Public Health Division
As stewards of public health, the Public Health Division and the Chief Medical Officer of Health:
- Conducts surveillance for ongoing assessment of public health risks;
- Implements strategies to ensure continuity of critical ministry services during an emergency;
- Ensures appropriate actions are taken to respond to urgent and/or emergency situations;
- Anticipates, prevents and responds to health risks and hazards by designing, implementing, funding and monitoring public health programs;
- Strives to ensure provincial compliance with national and international obligations;
- Engages with local, national and international partners in order to shape public health strategies;
- Informs and advises other provincial partners on evidence-based human health impacts of government initiatives;
- Advances public health in Ontario by providing and supporting education, research, training, and resource tools; and
- Develops the public health sector strategic direction within the broader health.

Health Promotion Division
This division promotes and encourages Ontarians to make healthier choices at all ages and stages of life. It creates healthy and supportive environments, lead the development of healthy public policy, and assists with embedding behaviours that promote health.
The Ministry is working with other ministries and community partners to develop and implement policies, programs and a service system that helps give children the best possible start in life, prepare youth to become productive adults and make it easier for families to access the services they need at all stages of a child's development. MCYS is responsible for funding the Healthy Babies, Healthy Children Program.
RRFSS is an ongoing telephone survey used to gather surveillance data, monitor public opinion on key public health issues, and collect information on emerging issues of importance to public health in Ontario. alPHa provides secretariat services to RRFSS.
The Ontario Chronic Disease Prevention Alliance (OCDPA) was officially formed in February 2003 to address the urgent need for integrated action and collaboration on the issue of chronic disease prevention. alPHa is an active member of OCDPA.
The Ontario Public Health Association (OPHA) is a voluntary, charitable, non-profit association. OPHA is an organization of individuals and Constituent Associations from various sectors and disciplines that have an interest in improving the health of the people of Ontario.
The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) is the main Government of Canada agency responsible for public health in Canada. PHAC’s primary goal is to strengthen Canada’s capacity to protect and improve the health of Canadians and to help reduce pressures on the health-care system. To do this, the Agency is working to build an effective public health system that enables Canadians to achieve better health and well-being in their daily lives by promoting good health, helping prevent and control chronic diseases and injury, and protecting Canadians from infectious diseases and other threats to their health. PHAC is also committed to reducing health disparities between the most advantaged and disadvantaged Canadians.
The Canadian Population Health Initiative (CPHI), as a part of Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), was launched in 1999 to expand the public's knowledge of population health.
The Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA) is a national, independent, not-for-profit, voluntary association representing public health in Canada with links to the international public health community. CPHA's members believe in universal and equitable access to the basic conditions which are necessary to achieve health for all Canadians.
The Public Services Health & Safety Association (PSHSA) is a not-for profit association created by the amalgamation of three respected health and safety leaders – Education Safety Association of Ontario (ESAO), the Municipal Health and Safety Association (MHSA), and the Ontario Safety Association for Community and Healthcare (OSACH). A Health & Safety Ontario partner, PSHSA works with Ontario public service sector employers and workers to reduce workplace risks and prevent occupational injuries and illness.
